Every winter, tens of thousands of gray whales pass through Southern California waters on their way between Alaska and Baja California – and Brothers Sport Fishing’s Whale Watching Charter puts you right in the middle of it on a private vessel.
This is not a commercial whale watching boat with 100 strangers. The Whale Watching Charter is a private charter – your group, your captain, your experience. Three hours, two departure windows – 7:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. – and a crew that actually knows San Diego’s whale activity patterns.
What You're Going to See
Gray whale migration peaks December through April, with January through March typically being the most active window. On a Whale Watching Charter during peak season, multiple whale sightings in a single trip is the norm, not the exception. These are large animals — adults run 40–50 feet — and watching them surface, spout, and occasionally breach at close range from a small private boat is a completely different experience from viewing them through binoculars on a crowded tour vessel.
Beyond gray whales, San Diego's waters also host:
- Blue whales, humpbacks, fin whales, and minkes — active year-round, with blues and humpbacks particularly strong in summer and fall.
- Dolphins are essentially guaranteed — Pacific white-sided, common, and bottlenose dolphins are resident and abundant.
- Marine birds, sea lions, and occasional sunfish round out the package.

The Whale Watching Charter is one of the only Brothers Sport Fishing trips that’s truly ideal for non-anglers — but if you’ve got a mix of fishermen and non-fishermen in your group, it’s worth knowing that Brothers runs the full range. The 4-Hour Charter is an easy entry-level fishing trip that works well for mixed groups. Lobster (Night)
5 hours, 6:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m.
This is the classic trip out after dark when lobsters are most active, working the reefs, pulling hoops, and stacking bugs until it’s time to run back. Night trips have an energy to them that daytime fishing doesn’t replicate. Bring a cooler and a good attitude.
Lobster Combo
9 hours, 12:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m.
Start with afternoon fishing for whatever’s biting – bass, halibut, bonito – then transition into lobster hoop netting as the sun goes down. You’re coming home with fish and lobster. This is the move if you want to make a full event out of it.

- Cancellations inside 7 days can apply the deposit toward a future reservation date.
